Look for special event station CF3BP from York Region (North of Toronto) to be active from Nov 13th to Dec 12th, operated by members of the York Region Amateur Radio Club. Activity is to mark the anniversary of the first transatlantic amateur radio transmission from Canada by Edward Rogers Senior from Pickering College on Main Street in Newmarket using the call 3BP. He was one of the few amateurs to successfully transmit across the Atlantic and the only Canadian to succeed, using a 500W spark gap transmitter. The ARRL sent Paul Foreman Godley, 3ZE, who was an expert in receiver technology to the British Isles to carry out the tests. The tests proved that shorter wavelengths could be used over long distances and with much lower power than thought possible. Club members will be operating various bands and modes during the event using A commemorative QSL card is being designed for anyone who contacts one of the stations. Chris Sullivan |
